Q & A Artist Interview:

1. Who are you and how would you describe your work/ art and where are you originally from, your accent sounds Dutch? How long have you been painting?

Hello! I am Tam (full name: Tamara Laporte - I have a middle name too but it shall not be uttered! ;)). I am also known as 'willowing'. I own this ning site! I am originally from Holland (The Netherlands) in Northern Europe.

I would describe my work as mixed media folk art. It ranges from cute children's illustrations to a more stylised fantasy type art. I have recently started working digitally as well which is great fun!

I've been painting/ drawing since I was very young, I remember once being incredibly proud of having drawn a cat in school when I was about 8! I started doing art more formally and seriously in high school and 'majored' in art & music. I then went to an Art Academy in Amsterdam for a year but didn't enjoy that very much. Since then I've been self-taught.

2. Tam, your soul is so full of light and your heart is a fountain of love, so this question may be totally irrelevant, but, apart from your family and all the love around you, what inspires you the most?

I draw inspiration from a variety of sources; from music to nature to work by other artists, but you're asking me what inspires me the most. I'd have to say that I feel most driven by wanting to send art into the world that is both attractive to the eye but also 'happy-making'. :0) I love feeling inspired by a quote, poetry or a simple positive affirmative statement (like; "I am Free" or "You are Loved").

It's one thing to create something that is aesthetically beautiful to the eye, but for me, it adds a whole dimension to my work when the message it delivers touches people on a deeper level. This is why I am very fond of some of my Rumi inspired work (The Universe Pays Attention to You - for instance).

3. What has your art journey been like? What other styles and mediums did you try before you found "Tam's Style"?

It's so funny when people ask me this because I don't really feel I have a 'Tam Style' quite yet although it's emerging more and more. I love trying out different things, the one day I really ache to do a beautiful stylised portrait and the other day I just want to produce loads of whimsy cuteness, the styles, though probably recognisably mine, are pretty different. But I digress. Before I did what I do now I used to work mostly on canvas in acrylics. I worked in watercolour sometimes too (with my late gran, miss her), but mostly acrylics. Dabbled with oils too, but turns out I have no patience, ha! I want to be able to finish a painting within 4 hours, not 4 days! The themes of my paintings then were more fantasy based, I did centaurs, unicorns and a lot of fairy type beings! The painting on the left is an example of some of my earlier work. I am not a huge fan of my earlier style truth be told, but I think we all have that! I do see them as having been an important part of my development, progress and process! Without having done those paintings, I wouldn't be where I am now. :)
